Speaking is considered an important English skill and essential to human communication. People around the world mostly use English to communicate nowadays. Being capable of speaking English, we can talk with anyone without any difficulty. Moreover, learning to speak English is a good way to upgrade yourself so you can assimilate into a new era of globalization. However, it is not easy for all students to be good at speaking. English major students at Haiphong Management & Technology University, especially freshmen, have to overcome many difficulties in learning and practicing English speaking skill. At high school, they generally focus on learning reading and writing, maybe a little of listening and speaking.
Learning environment from high school with repetitive and boring lessons, without exciting activities prevent students from practicing and improving English. They don’t get effective results in learning speaking in university because lack of practicing environment, fear of mistakes and old teaching method from high school. In the hope of finding out the difficulties of speaking that English major freshmen normally get, a study entitled: “Effective methods to improve speaking skill for English major freshmen at Hai Phong Technology & Management University” has been created because of all above mentioned reasons. 5. Methods of the study
Qualitative method was applied to carry out this study. Data of the survey will help to find out difficulties that English major freshmen face during their studying speaking process. The survey was broaden and make in detail from their experiences to suggest appropriate methods to help them learn speaking more effectively. Information and evidences from friends, books and Internet about speaking skill were searched for my survey questionnaire to understand this study deeper. Luận văn Tiếng anh: An investigation into the English translational versions of Trinh Cong Son’s songs in terms of semantic and syntactic features
1. Rationale of the study:
Trinh Cong Son (28 February 1939 – 1 April 2001) is a Vietnamese musician. He is considered one of the great musicians of pop music, New Vietnamese music with many popular works. There is currently no accurate record of his work (estimated at no less than 600 songs) . However, his songs are widely known for 236 songs (both lyrics and music). Trinh Cong Son’s music is performed by many singers, but most successful are Khanh Ly and Hong Nhung. In addition, he is considered a poet, painter, singer and amateur actor.
Son’s songs will be immortal in people’s hearts not only in Vietnam but also in many countries like: France, Japan and America, etc. People love to sing his songs. Many of those songs have been translated into many languages, most of them are in English, French and Japanese with different versions. For examples:

As a fan of Trinh Cong Son’s music, I find it very interesting to study the English translations of Son’s songs. However, up to now, just a few researches on the lyrics of the English translational versions have been found.
It is clear that there are many difficulties for translators to translate Trinh Cong Son’s songs into English. Practically, clarifying the syntactic and semantic features helps us have a clear view about Son’s songs and their English equivalences and find out another better way to translate Trinh Cong Son’s songs with full ideas of writer obtained.
Theoretically, more than 70 of his songs were translated into English, and many studies in the lyrics and melodies of Trinh Cong Son’s songs have done so far. However, researches on the syntactic and semantic features of English versus Vietnamese versions of Trinh have not been carried out. Therefore, it is necessary to do a research on this matter to have a total view about translating Trinh Cong Son’s songs into English. “A STUDY OF THE ENGLISH TRANSLATIONAL VERSIONS OF TRINH CONG SON’S SONGS IN TERMS OF SEMANTIC AND SYNTACTIC FEATURES” has been carried out for the reasons listed above.
In theory, more than 70 of his songs have been translated into English, and many studies on the lyrics and melody of Trinh Cong Son’s songs have been performed so far. However, studies on the syntactic and semantic features of English compared to the Vietnamese version of Trinh have not been performed.
Therefore, we need to study this issue to get an overview of the translation of Trinh Cong Son’s songs into English.
2.Aims of the study
Starting from the framework based on the semantic features of lexicon and syntactic features of phrases and sentences between English and Vietnamese, this research will take Trinh Cong Son’s English translated versions versus their originals in Vietnamese to investigate the similarities and differences when those songs are translated from Vietnamese into English in order to come to the generalizations of how the translating methods are rendered.
3. Scope of the study:
This study deals with investigating the procedures used in translating the semantic features of lexicon and the syntactic features of phrases and sentences in Trinh Cong Son’s songs taken from Trịnh Công Sơn – The collection of everlasting songs. 4. Design of the study
My graduation paper is divided into three parts :
The first part is the Introduction, including: the rationale, aims, scope, method and design of the study.

+ Section 2: The syntactic features of phrases and sentences in Trinh Cong Son’s songs when being translated from Vietnamese into English.
The last part is the Conclusion in which the author summary what have been discussed in chapter 4 with some comments on the limitations of this study and make suggestions for future studies.

However, what the author wants to express here is that idioms are the precious treasure of national languages that is the key to help learners know about nation, as well as custom and culture of each country all over the world. Therefore, it is the motivation for me to study idioms relating body parts that have made such a deep expression on the author for a long time that she finds it so interesting and useful. Most languages make use of idioms but the way individual words used varies from one language to another and each language has its own system and that they cannot always transfer the metaphorical use of a word from one language to another. Idioms help learners see the interest, the beauty as well as the cultural color of language which help us use and understand correctly and clearly. The author hopes that learners will understand about idioms and proverbs in English, especially idioms related to people description.
2. Aims of the study
Idioms are extremely difficult topics and merely well-understood by foreign English learners and even native speakers of English who take the idioms and proverbs for granted because when they use idioms, they do not know if they are using them. However,they really appreciate the idioms associated to attitudes and behaviors of speakers, so when they hear foreigners make grammatical or pronunciation mistakes, they are quite willing to accept and understand them, they might not understand what that person means and that leads to a misunderstanding and boring conversation. Considering all the characteristics, this paper made great use of qualitative method.
A qualitative approach allowed the researcher to gather non-numerical data from the supervisor, experts and friends, which provided more opportunities for explorations. Idioms were collected from dictionary and other sources of information to get valuable knowledge for this pape

During the research process, the author sees that English idioms, proverbs and expressions about body parts are an interesting subject. Idioms and proverbs are a treasure of each country. Because of its immensity, what have known about them is very little. Due to time allowance and limited knowledge, the author cannot cover all idioms on these issues, this study only focuses on idioms describing human body parts.
5. Design of the study
This study is composed of three main parts:
– Part I is the introduction which consists of rationale, aims, study methods, the scope and design of the study.
– Part II is the development – the main part of this paper which is divided into three chapters:
+ Chapter one is theoretical background of English idioms, definitions of idioms, how different idioms versus compounds, proverbs and slangs.

In recent years, English has become a very popular language in the world and in Vietnam as well. People use English for communication, travel, for one culture and trade exchanges and so many other fields in life. Vietnam is one of the countries which use English as the second language and as a result, English has adopted as one of the most important subjects in many Hotels in Vietnam.
Four English skills are essential for every English learner of all ages, nonetheless, learners seem to focus on reading and writing rather than speaking. They spend a lot of time on learning grammar for weekly tests and examination in each semester, meanwhile they are quite afraid of speaking English. In Hotels, speaking English seems to be less paid attention than the others. They do not spend much time practicing speaking in class and that is the main reason why they get difficulties with speaking. Moreover, many receptionists are weak on grammar, they lack vocabulary and feel so why communicating in English.
In fact, there are many other factors that affect speaking English such as intonation, grammar, linking, rhythm, and context and so on… and pronunciation is considered the most important one. During my speaking periods in Sea View Hotel and speaking test, fact shows that there many receptionists who get trouble with pronunciation like I do, especially English beginners and making pronunciation in English speaking becomes a popular problems. After long time of observing and investigation, ending sounds seems to be the most common pronunciation mistake of receptionists at Sea View Hotel. 2. Aim of the study
This study is to help receptionists realize their ending sounds errors. It also help receptionists’ have awareness of pronunciation problem and give some suggestions to deal with their ending sound errors. This reception will focus on two issues. The first one is to find out the most common English ending sound errors. The second one is about some solutions for their pronunciation problems.
These followings are three research questions of this study:
1) What is the most common pronunciation mistake that receptionists at Sea View Hotel tend to make when speaking English?
2) What are ending sound errors that receptionists’ are likely to face?
3) What are solutions to help receptionists’ avoid pronunciation mistakes
and solve their problems?
4. Scope of the study
There are many mistakes of English pronunciation that receptionists encounter when speaking. However, this study will not cover all problems in learner’s pronunciation and there are so many different material resources that require a lot of time effort while abilities and experiences of the author are limited. Therefore, this research will focus on the most common pronunciation mistakes of receptionists at Sea View Hotel that is ending sound. The author will concentrate on five common ending sound mistakes from survey questionnaire chosen by 25 receptionists from Sea View Hotel. The author hopes this study will be a useful material for every receptionists who concern this issue and help to get rid of their pronunciation mistakes
5. Design of the study
This study consists of three parts:
Part 1: Introduction
In this part, rationale, aims, methods, scope and design of the study were provided to introduce and to become basic for next chapter. Theoretical backdrop about English pronunciation and ending sound errors will be presented in second.
Part 2: Development
This part will consist of three chapters:
Chapter 1: Theoretical background provides the definition of English pronunciation its importance and some opinions of pronunciation errors.

Tarone (2005) argues that speaking English is usually viewed as the most complex and difficult skill to master. In a recent study, Bygate (2009) agreed with the aforementioned statement by claiming that learners with reading and writing proficiency do not always have fine speaking skills.
Chaney & Burk (1998) describe speaking as a crucial part of second language teaching and learning involving building and sharing meaning through the use of verbal and nonverbal symbols in a variety of contexts. Despite the importance attached to speaking, teaching speaking skills for many years has been undervalued and English language teachers have continued to teach speaking just as a repetition of drills or memorization of dialogues. However, today’s world requires that students develop and improve on their communicative abilities because that is the only way students can express themselves and learn how to follow the social and cultural rules appropriate in each communicative circumstance. Fluency according to Nunan (2003) refers to the use of language in a quick and confident manner with few pauses.
Ur (1999:120) states of the all four skills, speaking is considered to be able to be the most important skill. Therefore, learning speaking becomes the greatest interest for foreign language learners. However, speaking skill seems to be the most challenging task for every learner of every age especially children. There are many factors that affect young student’s Speaking skills. By understanding these factors not only helps the learners but the teachers as well as they could understand which factors needs paying attention and they could give proper attention to improve student’s speaking ability.
2. Aim of the study

3. Scope of the study
The study limits itself on focusing on the characteristic of speakers, passage and testing conditions and students’ perception about these factors.
4. Method of the study
A survey questionnaire is designed to collect students’ perception about which factors affect the speaking skill the most. Observation during actual teaching to verify the teachers’ responses on the methods used to teach speaking skills in English.
5. Design of the study
The thesis is divided into three parts:
Part I: Introduction; Part II: Development; Part III: Conclusion
Part I: Introduction
This chapter provides an overview of the study such as the rationale, the aims, scope, design and methods of the study.
Part II: Development
Chapter 1: Theoretical background
This chapter handles the theoretical background of the issues relating to speaking and teaching speaking, characteristics of young learners and factors affecting Speaking skills in English of children.
Chapter 2: Devoted to Research methodology
Chapter 3: Deals with findings and discussion.
